Perspective

In its effort to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and know-how, CAREX plans organises its second field trip in Iceland on June  15-18, 2010. This event will provide an opportunity for up to 20 selected participants to interact in a field setting to demonstrate the use of selected technologies, compare methodologies, exchange research experiences and help promote harmonisation of techniques and methodologies.  Field work will focus on developing and evaluating new technologies of common use across Life in Extreme Environments research including remote sensing devices and field analysis of ecosystem level processes such as biogeochemical cycling of carbon.

Study Sites

Depending on accessibility, two potential study sites are envisaged for this activity.

Hot spring area, Reykir

The research area is composed of various types of hot-springs that were formed in May 2008 after series of strong earthquakes. The area had low open thermal activity before the earthquakes and is located a few meters from a small research botany center. This makes the spot very well situated for in situ experiments. The whole thermal active area is located inside and just outside a small town named Hveragerdi which is located about 50 km east from Reykjavik. The newly formed hot springs have different range of pH and temperatures, from acid (sulfatara field) to more alkaline freshwater hot springs. The spot contain more acid than alkaline hot springs but it would be possible to access more specific type of hot springs if needed (hiking).

Glacial area

There are two glacial areas with glacier and some water (steams or lake) not very far from Reykjavik, Sólheimajökull and Gíjujökull. Both these small glaciers are about two and halve hour drive from Reykjavik (or about 2 hours from Hveragerði). Both sites are not far away from the main road (10-15 km) but to know if we can easily approach them in June will depend on the weather conditions in the spring time.

The Workshop

This activity, coordinated by MATIS-Prokaria, will be held on June 15-18, 2010. Over the four days, two days will be focussed on presentations and detailed discussions and two day will be dedicated to actual on-site demonstration of equipments.
