As part of CAREX’s objective to support young scientists, the project will hold its summer school on June 27 - July 3rd, 2010 in Pieve Tesino (Italian Alps). This interdisciplinary education initiative will gather 40 invited PhD students and Post-docs and will focus on education and knowledge transfer from a group of experienced European experts to a selected group of outstanding young researchers with a focus on an ecosystem based approach to research on life in extreme environments.
Scope
Following the CAREX approach, the summer school will be an interdisciplinary initiative covering life in extreme environments for various organisms (from microbes to plants) and various environments (subsurface, terrestrial, marine, polar environments and astrobiology). The school will include lectures from European experts, presentations from students as well as a field trip in the Italian Alps.
Preliminary Programme
| Sunday 27 June | Arrival of participants |
| Monday 28 June | Discovering life in extreme environments |
| Tuesday 29 June | Key issues for research on life in extreme environments in Europe: outcomes and findings from the CAREX project |
| Wednesday 30 June | Case studies: What makes life possible in extreme environments? |
| Thursday 1 July | Field trip: How life changes going up on the Alps |
| Friday 2 July | Technologies and methodologies to study life in extreme environments |
| Saturday 3 July | Departure |
