Scope of the survey

In the context of the survey, ‘research on life in extreme environments’ should be understood as scientific, technology or infrastructure development activities relevant to:

1-    The following organisms:

Plants - Aquatic

Viruses

Animals - invertebrates

Fungi

Animals - vertebrates

Lichens

2-    Evolving in on one or more of the following environments:

Terrestrial (non polar)

 

Marine (non polar)

Hot springs

 

Deep sea

High altitude and glacier

 

Hydrothermal vents

Hot regions and deserts

 

Reducing/anoxic

Acidic environments

 

Hypersaline environments

Alkaline environments

 

Sub seafloor

Polluted areas

 

Subsurface

 

 

Polar

 

Space

Polar regions

 

Planetary bodies

Polar Seas

 

Space vessels/space environment

Ice shelves

 

Subglacial environments

 

3-    Stressed by one or more of the following parameters:

Temperature

Chemicals and pollutants

Pressure

Available level of energy

ionising radiation

Dryness

non-ionising radiation

Salt concentration

visible light

Gaseous concentration

Funding

‘Funding’ should be considered as grants to be allocated to actual research, technology or infrastructure development activities relevant to research on life in extreme environments, including workforce. This funding can be either competitive (subject to calls) or dedicated to one or more institute/research centre.
