European Science Foundation


The European Science Foundation (ESF) was established in 1974 to create a common European platform for cross-border cooperation in all aspects of scientific research. Its membership comprises 77 national funding agencies, research performing agencies and research academies from 30 European nations. With its emphasis on a multidisciplinary and pan-European approach, the Foundation’s activities include providing science policy advice (Science Strategy); stimulating co-operation between researchers and organisations to explore new directions (Science Synergy); and the administration of externally funded programmes (Science Management). These take place in the following areas: Physical and Engineering sciences; Medical Sciences; Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences; Humanities; Social Sciences; Polar; Marine; Space; Radio Astronomy; Nuclear Physics.

Nicolas Walter is the CAREX Project Manager. He holds a Masters degree in space studies and is currently science officer at the space sciences unit of the European Science Foundation. Through his professional experience at ESF, he has been involved in science strategy and policy developments in the field of space sciences (European Space Sciences Committee), polar sciences (European Polar Board) and marine sciences (Marine Board – ESF). He coordinated the ESF initiative Investigating Life in Extreme Environments from the call for Expressions of Interest in early 2004 to the Sant Feliu de Guixols (Spain) workshop in November 2005 and the publication of the final report in April 2007. Through his involvement with the Marine Board-ESF’s activities, he was also part of the MarineERA (FP6 ERA-NET project) Project Office.
